The tease went on for months. Honda let a rumour slip here, a camouflaged photo there. What could they possibly do to the Civic that would “muscle it up” and excite drivers again?

The oxygen levels in Switzerland dropped as the audience took an collective gasp at the hot hatch on the stage at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

This is the first Civic Type R that will be turbocharged and is powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbo VTEC four-cylinder,

which spins out 306 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.  Those are the highest-ever figures for a Honda Type R model—and redlines at 7000 rpm.

The first Civic to receive the Type R badge was introduced in 1998 as the Civic SiR and has been coveted by tuners ever since.
