2027 Honda Civic Type R: Sharper Styling, Improved Performance and More Everyday Comfort

For driving enthusiasts, few names carry the same weight as Honda Civic Type R. For 2027, Honda is giving its legendary performance hatchback a series of updates designed to make it even more capable on the road and track, while adding more comfort and technology for everyday driving.

The refreshed 2027 Honda Civic Type R is arriving at dealerships this month, marking another chapter in the history of a model that has become synonymous with Honda performance. And with 2027 also marking the 30th anniversary of Civic Type R globally and the 10th anniversary of the model in North America, the timing is particularly significant.

A More Aggressive Civic Type R

The first thing you'll notice about the 2027 Civic Type R is its updated front-end design.

Honda has redesigned the front fascia with a larger grille opening and deeper front splitter, giving the Type R an even more aggressive appearance while serving a functional purpose. The revised design improves airflow, reduces turbulence and enhances engine cooling, particularly important when the car is being pushed hard during spirited or track driving.

The deeper splitter also contributes to increased downforce, reinforcing the Type R philosophy that aerodynamic design should be about more than just looking fast.

For 2027, Honda is also introducing Meteorite Gray Metallic, a new exterior colour joining Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and the iconic Championship White.

Performance Updates That You Can Feel

The Civic Type R has never been about performance for the sake of a spec sheet. Honda has focused the 2027 updates on changes that drivers can actually experience behind the wheel.

The suspension damping in the Type R's +R driving mode has been optimized to improve road-following performance while reducing bouncing and impact harshness. The result is intended to provide greater stability and a more controlled feel when cornering.

Honda has also updated the Rev Match system, allowing for quicker engine response during downshifts. For enthusiasts who enjoy working through the Civic Type R's manual gearbox, that means smoother, faster-feeling shifts when you're driving aggressively.  The brake pedal has received an update as well. A new yoke spring helps reduce play in the brake-pedal linkage, creating a more direct brake-pedal feel.

And underneath the hood, the redesigned engine cover takes inspiration from the engines found in earlier generations of Civic Type R models sold in Japan.

Still 100% Manual

In an automotive world increasingly dominated by automatic transmissions, the Civic Type R continues to take a different approach.

The 2027 Civic Type R remains exclusively available with a six-speed manual transmission, preserving the direct connection between driver and machine that has been central to the Type R experience.  Power continues to come from Honda's turbocharged 2.0-litre K20C engine, producing 315 horsepower. The engine is manufactured at Honda's Anna Engine Plant in Ohio using domestic and globally sourced components.

The result is a Civic that combines everyday hatchback practicality with the performance credentials of a true enthusiast car.

The Type R Gets More Comfortable

While performance remains the priority, Honda hasn't overlooked the fact that Civic Type R owners still have to live with their cars every day.

For 2027, heated front seats are now standard, a welcome addition for Canadian drivers. The red high-friction suede-like sport seats also receive a new perforation design with distinctive black striping.  Honda has added premium Ultrasuede to the instrument panel and upper front door panels, while a new diamond-pattern dashboard trim panel adds another performance-inspired detail to the cabin.

The interior also receives a series of darker grey and black finishes, including the shift knob, console trim, door handles, climate-control knobs and air-vent knobs.

An auto-dimming rearview mirror is also now standard, adding another touch of everyday convenience.

More Technology Comes Standard

The 2027 Civic Type R also receives a significant technology upgrade.  For the first time, Civic Type R features Google built-in, bringing Google Maps and Google Play directly into the vehicle. It also introduces Google Gemini, Google's AI assistant, allowing for more conversational interactions while helping drivers keep their attention on the road.

Alexa built-in is also included, along with two additional USB-C ports in the centre console above the standard wireless phone charger.  Honda has also enhanced the Civic Type R's standard Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, while adding a Post-Collision Braking System and an improved dual-tone horn.

30 Years of Type R

The updates to the 2027 Civic Type R arrive at an important milestone for Honda's performance heritage.  The first Civic Type R debuted in Japan as a 1997 model. Six generations later, the Type R name has become one of the most recognizable badges in the performance-car world.  The current Civic Type R continues that tradition by combining Honda's motorsport-inspired engineering with the practicality of a five-door hatchback. It's a formula that has helped make Civic Type R a standout among performance-oriented compact cars.  And perhaps most importantly for enthusiasts, Honda hasn't abandoned the fundamentals: a turbocharged engine, front-wheel drive, a six-speed manual transmission and a chassis engineered with the driver firmly at the centre of the experience.
